Oxford Arts Alliance hosts nationwide show #CAPnews

OXFORD >> For a small-town gallery, the Oxford Arts Alliance has hit significant heights with its current show, the National Juried Exhibition.

In the smallish room at 38 S. Third St. are about 50 pieces of art in various media that made it through the elimination process called jurying. The works have come from as far away as California and Arkansas and are composed of a variety of media.
Director’s assistant Leah Maholes said there were about 200 entries, many of them sent from far away. Artists found out about the show through publicity in art magazines and on the internet.
As they came in, Maholes said she was impressed with the quality, not just of the ones that were chosen, but others that didn’t make it. “I felt bad for some (that weren’t going to be in the show),” she said.
The subjects of the pieces range from some very realistic models, and even photographic, to extremely abstract. And the size runs the gamut from a good 6 feet tall to ones that can be held in of one’s hand. Included are at least two pieces of sculpture.
As viewers come in, they see a United States map on the table with stars showing where the works came from. It was not unusual to see Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado and California, as well as nearby Delaware and Pennsylvania.
Maholes said a lot of people have said they are impressed at where the works came from.
“For being a little town, we’re doing well,” she added.
The current national show continues until Oct. 14.
The next show will begin on Oct. 21 with an opening on the Friday evening. It is called “Art, Architecture and Archives” and will include works of C.X. Carlson, displays from the Oxford Area Historical Association, local history exhibits, Grier pottery and Hans Olson’s medals. That show will be sponsored by the Historical Association and the Sawmmill Grill and continues until Nov. 11.
The Oxford Arts Alliance gallery is opened Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
