Teenagers arrested after 'stolen cars' tried to escape police following petrol station theft Cap Alert

THREE teenagers have been arrested after police found stolen cars dumped in a street in Billericay.
Officers were patrolling in the town following a spate of burglaries when they became aware of two suspected stolen cars nearby.
A stolen Fiat 500 triggered automatic number plate cameras at about 9.30pm on Monday, then a member of the public raised the alarm about a red Mini, which was being driven by a youth.
Officers soon caught up with the Fiat 500 and attempted to flag it down, but it sped off.
The police lost sight of it and later found it dumped next to the red Mini in Glenside, Billericay, after an area search was conducted.
Det Sgt Mike Wilkinson, who is investigating the incident, said: “Once we found the two stolen cars, we called the dog unit in to assist us.
“The police dog was interested in tracing a scent so we let it go.
“The scent was tracked to three youths hanging around nearby, who matched the descriptions of the people inside the cars.
“It is also believed that the cars were used in the theft of petrol from the BP garage in Billericay.”
Police arrested two 17-year-old boys and an 18-year-old boy, who all live in the area, on suspicion of burglary and handling stolen goods.
They remained in custody at the time of going to press.
Det Supt Kevin Baldwin, district commander for Basildon, said: “We have been suffering from a lot of burglaries over the summer and Billericay has been a favourite hotspot.
“We think there are a number of different groups involved.
“We are committed to tackling burglaries and a lot of our efforts are going into arresting the culprits.
“Now we have got three people arrested but there we know there are others out there doing this kind of work.”
Following enquiries, officers established that the cars had been stolen from two properties in South Woodham Ferrers.
Police are appealing for witnesses.
