The Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture Series invites prominent people to encourage debate on important social issues. The series is a significant event on the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s calendar and encourages people to enter into dialogue – often about difficult subjects – in order to tackle the challenges we face today. Previous speakers include former US president Bill Clinton, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai and Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. DNA CONFIRMS BODY FOUND ALONG JUKSKEI RIVER IS EVELYN CHAUKE #CAPNews

JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng police have confirmed DNA results have concluded that the body found on the banks of the Jukskei River in Buccleuch is that of three-year-old Evelyn Chauke.

The toddler was swept away during flash floods in Alexandra last month.
Police say her family is currently at the Gauteng mortuary in Hillbrow.
“It was confirmed that the child belongs to the Chauke family. So far the Chauke family are now at the government mortuary processing the issue of burial. We’re happy because at the end of day the family will be closing the chapter.”


Evelyn’s father has said he kept replaying the day the floods swept her away and still thinks about what he could have done to save her.
Seven people were killed and hundreds displaced during flash floods last month.
Speaking to Women’s League President Bathabile Dlamini, Shadrick Chauke said he relives the day he lost his daughter constantly.
“The day of the incident I didn’t believe this would happen, the tree my child climbed on was high and when she fell off the tree I didn’t see her, I was washed away on one side while she fell into the current.”
Sitting next to Chauke was his wife quiet and teary eyed.
Chauke said she witnessed everything and is still shaken.
“My wife told me that when she fell, she fell head first. We fell off the tree and the water current was powerful the water took time to subside.”
The family said they appreciate all the support and in time may heal.
